Cheating at Chinese!

I really do like Chinese and Indian food - at least as served in the UK's huge numbers of take-aways.

I'm not so convinced that I'd be quite so keen to eat real Chinese food or Indian cuisine, although I must say I'd be entirely willing to take a crack at it . . But it isn't the kind of food you can easily do at home - til now.

I must say that if it were a good few years ago, and were I still in the trying to impress ladies stakes, I'd be using this discovery to do the trick - as long as I could keep people out of the kitchen!

So here's a plate full of the meal I told Dot I cooked from scratch - no, not really:

And here are the two main ingedients:

To be honest, they tasted every bit as good as the dishes we get from a local take-away, and they took around 9 minutes each in the microwave, plus another 2 minutes for a sachet of Uncle Ben's rice, done last. When each of the main dishes was ready to eat it went in the oven at around 120 to keep warm, no problem.

There you are - and all for about £4.20 for the two of us - £1.59 for each of the two main dishes, and a quid for the rice - no problem. There are more similar dishes in the range, and the chicken curry is really tasty, too . .

Thanks, Iceland - a nice product line!

Good value for money, and yummy, too . . .

Like a lot of people of our age, I do enjoy my own cooking - and I'm not wildly enthusiastic about eating out at whatever expense, when I can probably do just as well in my own kitchen. Of course, there are exceptions - Chinese food being a prime example. I do have a secret formula for tasty proper home Chinese, which I'll reveal in another post, but I don't object to paying for something different and yummy in a Chinese Restaurant - especially if you can get a good variety of tastes at a reasonably price.

So we're in Kent, staying with friends in Gillingham, and we were looking for lunch when we remembered this restaurant - The Real China, at the Dockyard shopping centre in Chatham.

At £6.95 a head for an all-you-eat buffet, it seemed like a deal, so we decided to give it a try. The place itself is clean and tidy, the welcome friendly, and essentially, you just get on with it after ordering your drink - a self refilling Pepsi Max is £2.80, which expensive but at least it gives you an ample drink with your food.

There was a good selection of both starters and main dishes; and it all tasted pretty nice. The only dish I wasn't keen on was the spare ribs - the sauce was OK, but the meat was dry and unappetizing, sadly. Here are pics of the starter plate and the three main plates I worked my way through:
